Rallying for Kosovo
As we hear that Kosovo has decided to lead itself, an amazing display rallied through Times Square into yesterday afternoon. As I walked out into the brisk late morning, I could hear the horns from several blocks away. As I approached Times Square I could see the cars, all draping the red flag of Kosovo and even marchers gathering at the crossroads of the world. Here is the video, I didn’t get the chance to get a ton, but at least some. Follow the link for more on its independence and also the nations that now criticize us for supporting freedom and this new nation.
The United States Monday formally recognized Kosovo’s independence, insisting the breakaway Serbian province was a “special case” despite angry objections by Russia, China and other powers.
But Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice also vied to reach out to Serbia, where Kosovo’s declaration of independence was met with rioting Sunday that targeted two McDonald’s restaurants and the US embassy in Belgrade.
“The United States has today formally recognized Kosovo as a sovereign and independent state. We congratulate the people of Kosovo on this historic occasion,” Rice said in a statement.
President George W. Bush had “responded affirmatively” to Kosovo’s request for diplomatic relations with the United States, added Rice, who is visiting Kenya.
“As Kosovo today begins its life as an independent state, the United States pledges to continue to be its close friend and partner,” she said, reaffirming also “our friendship with Serbia, an ally during two world wars.”
Nicholas Burns, the State Department’s number three, said that Rice had telephoned Serbian President Boris Tadic on Sunday to stress the two nations’ “strong relationship” despite the frictions over Kosovo.
Rice said the United States will now work with the international community to implement a “supervised independence” plan for Kosovo put forward by the former Finnish president and UN special envoy Martti Ahtisaari.
“In light of the conflicts of the 1990s, independence is the only viable option to promote stability in the region,” her statement said.
Rice said that Kosovo was a “special case,” citing Yugoslavia’s breakup, “the history of ethnic cleansing and crimes against civilians in Kosovo,” and its extended period of UN administration.
But the United States was still on a collision course with Russia and China, both permanent members of the UN Security Council who fear that recognition of Kosovo sets an alluring example for other independence-minded territories.
The four most powerful European Union states — Britain, France, Germany and Italy — backed Kosovo’s independence. But a clutch of other EU members including Spain, fretting over their own territorial integrity, were opposed.
Speaking earlier Monday while on a visit to Tanzania, Bush said the people of Kosovo “are now independent.”
Kosovo unilaterally declared its independence from Serbia Sunday.
The declaration was to be followed by a 120-day transition period, marked by the deployment of a 2,000-strong European Union police and judicial team intended to smooth the transition and ensure democracy.
A NATO-led force now numbering 17,000 troops from 34 nations has been on the ground in Kosovo since 1999, when the United States and its allies intervened militarily to drive Serbian troops out of the province.
Hey there, Adam–I am new to your blog (I saw you talk about it yesterday morning). I gotta say, I’m impressed by this blog and your interactions with your viewers. I live in Pittsburgh, PA and with the PA primary now appearing to count for the upcoming presidential elections, I find it enlightening that there is a forum to discuss both national and international events. Thanks for doing this, and I look forward to ‘meeting’ some like-minded folks on here. I have one question for you–Do you like reporting the news, or do you like being an anchor?
Take Care–
Dyann
Wow what a site! I would never have guessed there would be a rally there in NYC!
Dyann we do a lot of debating here on the threads Adam sets up for us. I have learned a lot.
See what I mean?? You can’t get video like this on TV…only on Adam’s blog.. makes the viewer feel like you’re right there watching… this was good Adam!
Too bad you weren’t doing a live report… then we would get to hear your signature
From NYC, New York, Adam Housley, FOX News (I love when he says that… very powerful!!)
Hi Adam,
I bet the celebration in Times Square was a classic ‘goosebumps’ moment. And as for the nations that criticize the US for celebrating their independence with them……Sometimes doing what’s right does not always meet with high-5’s and pats on the back.
Whatever we can do to help this, and other, nation(s) to become independent, is the right thing to do.
Dyann, there’s a link at the right American Ballot Box, that’s the latest politcal link that we visit and offer opinions and latest information. Anything you can add to that, especially regarding Pennsy, would be appreciated. It looks like your state, Wisconsin and Texas can be the breakers.
Also, you can go back through previous topics that Adam posted and leave a comment. They might not be as active as the current one but many of us go back and pop updated comments into them.
As Kathy said, we do a lot of debating here, it’s fun and informative! You’ll enjoy it.
I am happy for Kosovo, but independence is going to come at a price, not that there hasn’t been a heavy price paid already, but I highly doubt russia and china are going to let this one slide.
Gonna be a blood bath.
Gonna get messy.
US Troops will be involved
Derek, you have a way with making me nervous hahahahaha

Hey to Adam and to all on here–Thanks for the welcome to the blog! Adam, you simply must take some time to come here to Pittsburgh…the view from PNC Park is incredible, even if the Pirates are not too much fun to watch!
Also, as anyone around here can tell you, the view of downtown when you come thru the Fort Pitt tunnels (on your way into town from the airport) has to be seen to be believed! Plus, if you like football, the Stillers are the bomb here in the ‘burgh. Hockey is truly loved too–just wait till we get our new arena! Anyhow, I like the way people can ‘banter’ back and forth. I love to do that, especially on current events and politics. One thing I noticed yesterday on the Fox and Friends show–you seem to have an almost liberal viewpoint, which I have to admit I find perplexing for a Fox employee. Maybe it’s just the hype re: CNN vs. MSNBC vs. Fox…
I really like the idea you have for anchoring from the field–almost an Anderson Cooper thing, right? (See, there’s the CNN comparison.) Good luck with the idea. Anything firmly rooted in the plans for that in the near future?

I’m lost on the Pakistan thing… is this good or bad for us?
Pakistanis celebrate in the streets after early returns from the country’s elections show President Pervez Musharraf suffering massive defeat in parliament race.
Thanks KT I am like that guy on the commercial pretending to fall when asked to point to Asia. I know it if I look on a map, but otherwise I have no idea. Geography is not my strongpoint especially international geography. Now you know why we have several globes.
Actually Adam is planning a state run news program after the coup (am I supposed to mention it?) we are going to start small, we are going to seize control of an LA Area McPlayplace, we will set up our headquarters there, we will quietly expand our area to the child dining area, then of course to the main dining area, after several years our political capital will be of such, that we should be able to take the kitchen relatively easy. Within the next few years, the parking lot will be ours….bwahahahahaha
All of this will be guided by adam and his reporting will be broadcast via walkie talkies to our entire empire….
KT that is the question! Some say Musharoff helped Pakistan to maintain some rest, others argue he is the problem. They say he is bed with the terrorists. Personally I think only time will tell. We got warned about Putin when he first ran, but the Russians seemed to believe he had changed.
I think this is a guessing game with only time as the true revealer.
Adam,
I am building an Idol to you in my basement….I knew there was a reason I liked you…..MAC’s unite
Hmmm. Kosovo-Americans now?
I’m with Derek. I’m not so sure about China but I’m almost positive that Russia will stir the pot enough to get a lot of people killed. Whether or not they become openly involved is another question. The idea that they are so worried about the Serbs in Kosovo is ludicrous considering what the Serbs did last time. And here’s a question: I wonder if Radovan Karadzic or Ratko Mladic will be involved in whatever counteraction the Serbs are working on? -Rod-
Adam…don’t let Derek fool you…it’s a dart board
-Rod-
Kathy, I’m struggling with the fact that Bin Laden has been there and not been captured. I know they’re supposed to be our allies, but come on now, too much tme has passed, I can’t believe that they do not where that 6′ 4′ man is hiding.
Like Adam said, it won’t be a good thing if the bad guys get in there… this will be interesting to see it unfold and how it will affect America.
The main problem with Musharraf’s apparent loss is that one of the opposition’s beefs with him is that he’s too close to the US. What he’s been able to do is limited by internal politics there but by all accounts he’s been invaluable. It would seem that without Musharraf, that cooperation will end. Whether or not Bhutto’s party decides to go after the Islamists remains to be seen. I think the other party is Pro-Islamist, so no help there. Sometimes, better the devil you know. -Rod-
Rod that is what some say, then others say he is the devil that knows the exact location of Bin Laden. We have tried it with Musharoff and Butto is dead, Bin Laden is fairly free. I think only time will tell who he really is.
Adam that would be a very quiet presidency!
I beat you to this Adam– preceding thread- lol
I was at Walmart a couple nights ago and I met the greeter there and she was from Kosovo- and last night Geraldo talked about the regained independence as you well know he was there in 1999- and I am happy for Kosovo-
More power to them– they deserve to have their independence–
Signed,
Kosovo fan
as a final thought- it is nice these people were able to march at Times Square-
True Kathy, but at the same time, OBL is pretty well neutered too. Yes, it’d be nice if we got our hands on him, but we might find that to be a double edged sword. The way things are now, he’s quiet and the natives are more or less lethargic. The day his face appears in the news and he’s dressed in an orange jumpsuit, all that will change. My guess is that such an event would be a sort of trigger for a near-worldwide uprising of extremists. That’s not a reason not to go after him, we just need to be aware that there’s going to be a price to pay. -Rod-
The weird thing is that it doesn’t actually change much. Kosovo was independent in all but name. The Serbian government had no control over the area. This is just making official what has been fact for 9 years.
Serbia Recalls U.S. Ambassador After Bush, EU Countries Recognize Kosovo as Independent
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,331018,00.html
It matters though. Much the same is true with Taiwan and China, but if Taiwan were to declare itself to be independent, we’d likely be at war with China within the week. -Rod-

This morning on the radio, they were talking about Reno possibly getting the winter olympics in 2018. But the guy says, The Olympics don’t look kindly on las Vegas or Reno so we may not get it. So I’m thinking, yep, you’re right, we have chicken ranches, gambling, free drinks and a 24 hour night life… what does China have? The world’s record for mass murder, taking hostages in retaliation of free speech, a communist style government and child abuse.
FONTANA, Calif. — A hunger for carnitas nearly led to some carnage after a Fontana man was robbed of a bag of tacos at gunpoint.
Police Sergeant Jeff Decker says the 35-year-old victim had just bought about $20 in tacos from a street-corner stand Sunday night and was bicycling home when the suspect confronted him and said “Give me your tacos.”
Decker says the suspect grabbed the bag of food, punched the victim in the face and began to flee.
When the victim demanded his tacos back, the suspect pointed what appeared to be a handgun at the man and threatened to kill him before running away.
Ok, how did the guy doing the robbery know it was tacos in the bag if the guy was on bicycle? Need a visual here
Derek and Rod
you are both right this is very probably going to get ugly in Kosovo. I am also pretty sure that a large part of our decision to recognize Kosovo’s independence is to put Russia (Putin) on notice that we are ready to play hard ball with them again. If anybody has noticed our ‘friendship’ with Russia has become rather strained with their support of Iran (Persia) nuke power plants. Russia has also been playing nice with N.Korea, Serbia (for many many years) and is throwing a fit over our working with Poland and ??? (can’t remember the other nation) to build a major part of the Stratigic Defence Initiative on European soil. This is going to be very interesting over the next ten to fifteen years.
Karen
I hate playing the fear monger but you have every right to be concerned about the fate of Pakistan/Musharref and their twenty or so nukes. If the wrong govt gains controll and they allow the bad guys to ’steal’ or other wise aquire a nuke the U.S or India is in deeeep Do Do. I say India because those two nations hate each and are poised today o go to war in just a few hours notice…research it it is a concern.
KT,
I dunno, maybe “TACO BELL” on the side of the bad was a clue? Kidding. The guy was probably be watched.
Retread, yup. Hardly a time to put either a spineless or a power-crazed politician in office. -Rod-
THE 21st century Country(NATION) Boomer ……. =]
oo and Adam…… i soooo bet you love Hiliary Clinton and Hussienie too……..NOTTTT!!!!!!!!!
Oh Dear Lord, Pakistan has nukes. Adam hasn’t taught us enough about the Middle East, mostly he’s been concentrating our knowledge in South America.
Adam, this is your fault that I don’t know this.
When you catch up can we get some threads relating to the Middle East, please? I’ll take any information you have handy.
oo by the way people by around 2060 according to the Census the minorities combined will become the ” minority majority ” I’m learning about it ….. one of the last topics of AP govt and politics…..
ooo and Adam…. i also learned about the California Proposition 187( 1994)
… very intresting….. im sure you know about it…..
oo and also the Simpson - Mazzoli Act……

Avi it probably will if the Democrats take over and mess with the taxes of the small business owners.
Rod, point taken hahahaha
Avi, do you have recommendations for news from Israel. Most of our news is sympathetic to your and our enemies. Fox excluded but they never go into the details that I would like to know about your nation.

http://www.haaretz.com ( high level english content news excellent read)
http://www.debka.com ( security matters ….. very good youll like it alot )
I guess this is a good place to have a debate. OK, lets look over the whole thing from another side now…..Just a couple of points to play the devils advocate….
1. The red flags? Are they Kosovan? Looked Albanian to me? Is it possible Kosovo might merge into Albania sometime (they already think they have the same flags…etc) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Flag_of_Albania.svg
2. This could give legitimacy to many other separatist movements (mind you not all separatists are good or benevolent) to name some Basque (Spain) some of the early expert terrorist came from ETA (plz check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ETA). The LTTE in Sri lanka are no better (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LTTE). There is a distinct possibility these terrorist organizations could renew/revitalize their demands for a separate country.
3. KLA (Kosovo Liberation Army) is rumored to have “direct links with Osama Bin Laden. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kosovo_Liberation_Army#_note-1). Are we sure we’re not supporting the wrong crowd?
4. Even though i am not a very big fan of UN, it does have it’s uses. This act does go against the charter of UN & specifically of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1244. If we don’t regard UN laws & resolutions, other nations will get a nice excuse to blatantly violate other laws (IMHO)
5. This could cause further instability in the Balkans, with the Serbs in Bosnia demanding a state & the Albanians in Macedonia doing the same.
What do you guys think??????
Avi-
I did not know you were not a Israel citizen–
Your dad works out of Florida?
yah susan he works in miami hes a bankruptcy lawyer there…. i think i said it before….
my bro sis and dad made citizenship last year besides me and my mom…. becuase i dont wanna become an israeli …… i dont want to be bound to anything in the future i prefer to be and only be American…. and also for patriotic reasons….
dont get me wrong i like israel and all but as far as being a citizen and living her neee…..
I’m out of here after 12th grade for college in the states…. mostly all my friends have their army draft dates already around july of 09′ a few weeks after we graduate … its going to be very weird … but yah we move on and do what we all gotta do
What happened??? why was my comment not posted?????
I still do not get how the US benefits from this.
I think that all this makes Europe as a whole much weaker and I just do not get how the US benefits from a weaker Europe. I also think that by turning Serbia away from the US and the EU, the US and the certain countries in the EU are empowering Russia. I believe that Kosovo should have been given autonomy, but not independence. Also what makes you think that in the future, states in the US with large Mexican populations for example, would not want to break away and have their own independent countries?
Fra–
I don’t think it is realistic the states with larger mexican populations could break away and become independent countries-
Susan, but isn’t it a very simillar thing to what happened??? An area where many of one ethinicity decide to seperate & form another nation. God forbid if we try to prevent it & some of mexican origin are killed in the process…..it might be ethinic cleansing…..
harsahl–
I am on Adam’s page-
I think like he just said– Korsovo has since when tried to become independent- this has been a very divided area- the Serbs versus the Albanians-
What distressed me more in these days, the Albanians not only had to leave and re-locate but people died-
so God bless these have regained an independence long gone!
Susan-Az and Adam,
But what happened in Kosovo could happen in the US in 100-200 years from now.
The biggest problem here is this is not just about Kosovo, is about all the other regions in Europe where different ethnic groups live, and they would also want to break away. Those areas include regions in: Georgia, Moldova, Slovakia, Romania, Spain, Ukraine, Cyprus, even the UK, among others. It is especially wrong when you think of regions in the ex Soviet Republics where people were forced by Stalin to move.
I think the message here is that in order to “win”, you have to win demographically, and I personally think that this is against democracy.
Fra–
I think as long as there are differences, there will always be conflict- and this is just how it has always been–
I can’t look ahead in 100 years- I have no clue what goes on from one day to the next- I just know I won’t be around– and it saddens me to see how people can’t just get along just for the sake of Peace-
I just don’t believe in oppression —-
Obviously I won’t we around either, but this is what happened to Serbia anyways, and I just do not think it was fair. I think it has become a bad precedent for other separatist regions in the world, and for the future.
In the short term I think this will once again destabilize Europe, and I do not think this is good for the US and the world.
I do not believe in oppression either, but I also do not believe in unilateral decisions. What is going to happen with the Serbian dominated regions of Kosovo? They should not be forced to be part of Kosovo, or should they?
Maybe they can figure out how to get along- like people should? lol
China’s leaders allow worship only in government-monitored churches, temples and mosques. Members of unofficial congregations frequently are jailed and harassed.

I am an american patriot, and usually agree with the actions the U.S. takes, but being the primary supporter of the breakaway of Kosovo from Serbia is in my opinion a terrible thing for us as a nation to be doing. Adam, those red flags are not the flags of Kosovo. Those are the flags of Albania. The flag of Kosovo is blue with a yellow shape of kosovo in the middle and six stars above. We have broken international law and have in a way helped cede Kosovo, the cultural and religious heart of Serbia, to Albania. Serbia has been a political entity for hundreds and hundreds of years. It would be akin to our New England seceding from the Union because a lot of Canadians moved there and became the majority of the population, and a far away country such as China threatening us to allow N.E. secede or face repercussions. I cannot understand why we are doing this, or what we will gain from it, especially at a time when our image is not as shining as usual. I would love for Dr. Condeleeza Rice to come on TV and explain to the nation the reasoning for this action.
Susan, I completely agree with you. People (Serbs & Albanians) should get along. Kosovo should be an autonomous region NOT another country, Kosovans & Serbs should learn to live together. But supporting Kosovo’s secession from Serbia is a wrong thing for us to do. I have given the points earlier..
