Where in the World??
by Adam Housley

Robert Shaffer has made it to Jordan and has already written his first dispatch. Be prepared for that to come on Monday. He will be able to comment and answer some of your questions. So as Robert arrives for work, I am taking off for vacation. BUT….where am I going? No cheating now. The person who guesses the right answer gets a special greeting. The only hint…..not tropical. Good luck!

I know quit afew democrates that will not vote for either canidate because they are - hold-on-to your-hats…weak on defense.
In the gutter?
You are kidding right…?

http://youtube.com/watch?v=hZ38N8OUg3Q
Funny how CNN and the other MSM peep are virtually ignoring it…
Wow.. the economy sure is in the gutter, huh!! I really think it’s all getting pretty scary.
From Susan’s article about Ireland……
But boosted by generous tax benefits for multinational companies, the Irish economy roared to life during the nineties, earning the moniker, the “Celtic Tiger.” Between 1995-2000, the economy expanded at an astounding average of 9.5 percent per year; now it has eased to a still robust rate of 4-5 percent annual growth.
Note: TAX BENEFITS — Not TAX INCREASES! Maybe the Irish leaders can share this with the US leaders……
Clinton — grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Clinton says ‘we cannot win’ Iraq war
Published: 03.17.08, 21:32 / Israel News
Democrat Hillary Clinton charged on Monday the Iraq war may cost Americans $1 trillion and add strain to the sagging US economy as she made her case for a prompt US troop pullout from a war “we cannot win.”
This week marks the fifth anniversary of the US invasion of Iraq, but the economy’s woes competed for attention as the top issue facing voters when they choose their next president in November. (Reuters)
Terri: I think the problem for him is that it shows he played a race candidate to get elected to the senete, but now he wants to be president it’s come to bite him in the ass, since he can’t win as a race candidate. This also makes him look shallow, and as if he changes his position to get elected, the same problem Mitt Romney had, but far harder to explain.
I. cannot. stand. Nancy. Pelosi.
GRRRRRR
Well, just thought I’d drop by to see wasssup.
Hey everyone!
I’ve been over at Greta’s caught up in the whole Obama drama…
I think this Obama deal with that bigot spiritual leader might just cause him some real problems!
@Max
heh heh.
@Susan-AZ
oyasumi nasai
I’m out as well. Be well and safe, All!
((departs))
3rd try: this site is eating posts again
LDG: I thought they answer was going to be that you weren’t a self respecting loyalist.
LDG–
got it– never mind Adam–
Don’t want to get you into trouble–
thanks LDG– I appreciate the explanation as I fully understand now–
Oyasumi nasai to you when you decide to depart–
Time for me to get busy here as well–
And I DO appreciate your teachings as well as the explanations–
@Susan-AZ
just nonsensical, not “bad”.
Northerners are in Northern Ireland, not in Eire (Republic of Ireland). They are by long tradition blood enemies.
*No* self-respecting loyalist (which is impled by the term “Northerner”) would be caught singing a nationalist song, especially one that advocates the (re-)conquest of “his” land by his blood enemy.
this may lead to your asking “why can *you* sing “Four Green Fields” then?
answer: because I had need to be seen as a republican Irishman at times in my life, and it helps if you can join in the singing they start when you are in a pub full of such fellows.
You too Susan…Im gone for the rest of the day.
Have fun everyone!!!
Patty– LDG– KC– K2- Jen
Have a good St. Patty’s Day– Enjoy the day with a smile–
till later–
oops–
my post went through without me finishing it–
LDG– I was playing with words– is this bad?
dunno susan, but i bet his “pot” was green! *LOL*
ha ha ha ha
Adam-
Are you in Eire hanging out with a narthanar, singing -Four Green Fields?
@Susan-AZ
“Are you in Eire hanging out with a narthanar, singing -Four Green Fields?”
argh.
friendly question, really: did you mean to write nonsense?
I will ask this– is skynard irish?
it was susan…..
Now I have to look “susan” up– LOL
No girls– I am not offended– KC and Patty– I honestly did not let the V8 juice hit me on the forehead until I realized Patty was being lazy- typing-

And I was being lazy-thinking-
KC… her mother’s favorite.
Heck yes I know who he is– We have CD’s up the kazoo here- of every rock- classical- blues– et al– Ken was a music person and still is– but the skynard- as to Skynard threw me off– as you know, I am easily confused!!!!! I read it as I see it– LOL And I am never afraid to ask–ask LDG
LDG-
“narthanar” = northerner, in the patois. Means a Northern Irishman and implies Ulsterman.–Now your whole story makes sense– it is a cute story– and you got to stay and drink!!!!!!!
thanks–
Adam-
Are you in Eire hanging out with a narthanar, singing -Four Green Fields?
Patty
Perfect song for your beautiful daughter. Was it one of her favorites??
Susan - I was just kidding you too!!!!
We played Free Bird at our daughter’s funeral.
I knew you who it was susan. I was just kidding ya
The four fields are the Provinces of Ireland with Ulster being the “field” that is still in British hands, the old woman a traditional personification of Ireland herself
Here is the Ulster– reference to LDG– Ulstermen-
a gene carried through the heritage?
Tay-Sachs attributed to his Irish heritage.–
that is a sad story- very–
I have CD’s here– I was just thrown off by the name not being capitalized–
Patty
Skynard- you betcha - woohoo
Susan - You are being silly - right??????
Susan: a band, did ‘Free Bird’
Are you talking about Lynard? the not captializing of the skynard threw me off–
SUSAN!!
*L* your gonna feel silly when you find that answer i bet.
speaking of Irish heritage….this is sad. And to think he was born on St. Pats Day too. Such a beautiful baby.
I had never heard of Tay-Sachs disease.
http://www.wibw.com/home/headlines/16739936.html
what the heck is a skynard–
time to look!
LDG–
BLUSH– Credit goes to you– You enlighten me! (hugs)
@Patty
“But skynard…now that i know!”
woohoo!
You know– I forgot about the orange clash in Northern Ireland in 2004– Now you have me reading again–
We have cousin that performs weekly in a irish pub, he loves singing those tales.
I usually have to have him explain them to me. But skynard…now that i know!
@Susan-AZ
Bravo! just right. It is a classic irredentist Irish nationist song.
LDG–
As you typed the question, I was already looking–
I like to see the whole picture–
As in M-101 Howitzer- 21 gun salute- LOL–
Did you see in the Howitzer thread how I looked up the history to the 21 gun salute even after the answer was given– I had to have the full picture–
Phone rings and I miss so much
LDG - thanks for the clairification.
Yep, think it is better to be wearin’ of the green today….., if you are venturing into a bar!
Patty–
as we learn together-
The song tells of an old woman who had four green fields; and how strangers tried to take them from her; and how her sons died trying to defend them. Its middle stanza is a description of the violence and deprivation experienced by the Irish, including the people in Northern Ireland (currently part of the UK), though the British are not explicitly identified (nor Saxons, nor Danes).[3] At the end of the song, one of her fields remains out of her hands:
“But my sons have sons, as brave as were their fathers;
My fourth green field will bloom once again,” said she.
The song is interpreted as a parable of the British colonization of Ireland and the current status of Northern Ireland. The four fields are the Provinces of Ireland with Ulster being the “field” that is still in British hands, the old woman a traditional personification of Ireland herself (see Kathleen Ni Houlihan).
@Susan-AZ
yes, that is “Four Green Fields”. now can you tell me what it means? ((does the professor pose))
Adam–
are you singing this in Eire at the moment?
“narthanar” = northerner, in the patois. Means a Northern Irishman and implies Ulsterman.
What did I have, said the fine old woman
What did I have, this proud old woman did say
I had four green fields, each one was a jewel
But strangers came and tried to take them from me
I had fine strong sons, who fought to save my jewels
They fought and they died, and that was my grief said she
Long time ago, said the fine old woman
Long time ago, this proud old woman did say
There was war and death, plundering and pillage
My children starved, by mountain, valley and sea
And their wailing cries, they shook the very heavens
My four green fields ran red with their blood, said she
What have I now, said the fine old woman
What have I now, this proud old woman did say
I have four green fields, one of them’s in bondage
In stranger’s hands, that tried to take it from me
But my sons had sons, as brave as were their fathers
My fourth green field will bloom once again said she
LDG–
Cute story if I can catch the :narthanar’s part–
@Susan-AZ
“Have you ever seen this one?”
um, yes.
Heck, I can still sing “Four Green Fields” when I need to fit in with the crowd.
and crossed over to the green side, big huge fight?”
I think what I meant– if I was there and I wore maybe some orange, as an outsider, would I get the crap knocked out of me–
as for their differences there, yes, I do know this has been an ongoing thing–
@Susan-AZ
re: Eire.
Oh good, you got it while I was away.
re:”I wonder if I wore Orange and went into a bar today–Irish bar, how many people would throw mugs at me? Or would they even know?”
True story. San Francisco, middle 1980’s. Walked into the pub that *is* named “The Starry Plow” there with an old teammate who grew up in the same part of S.F. (and is Irish-American, and is R.C., not that that ever troubled us). We went up to the bar line to get pints and the bartender took one look at me, looked over at my pal and said “What’s his name?”. My pal introduced me by my given name. Bartender said: “No. What is his *name*?”. My pal offers my family name. In one heartbeat, all eyes right and left of us at the bar line turned to *me*. “That’s a narthanar’s name, that is”, said the bartender…
…and things got a bit fun from there. Ah, my mis-spent youth. ((grins more))
I wore green today, but i’d forgotton it was St Patricks Day.
Have you ever seen this one?
Caitlin Ni Houlahain (Symbol of Ireland)
They stole her dowry from the warm black thatch.
They quenched her fire and left her cold to moan.
She hears no lover’s thumb upon the latch,
But all night weeps alone.
I saw her praying hands across the leas,
Like lilies sloping in the breezy rain,
Imploring those beyond the western seas
To come to her again.
But Caitlin, I will be your lover now.
I’ll fold you in my strength and ease your pain,
‘Till all the wanderers return to you.
And build your house again.
LDG–
2:41- Me-
I was typing as you were-
Now this is why I love this blog—
Look at how much we learn– LDG– You are quite the teacher– and if you ever get a bacterial infection- I will send you the tablets!!
@Susan-AZ
“The Starry Plow”
That is one of the nationalist symbols of Eire. Many, many Irish-Americans are sympathetic to the republican cause, and as such a public house (or you would say “bar”) in any American city might well have such a name.
“…and crossed over to the green side, big huge fight?”
Been that way for about 400 years, so yes.
“Do I have to look Eire up? Where is this?”
That is the name of the country, the independent Republic of Ireland. (It is also used as misnomer for the island of Ireland.)
Adam–
Are you in Erie and headed over to England? Don’t forget Max–
Susan…maybe they will throw beer!
Adam–
Are you in Erie?
Here Patty–
Éire is the nominative form in modern Irish of the name for the goddess called Ériu in Old Irish, a mythical figure who helped the Gaels conquer Ireland as described in the Book of Invasions. It is still used in the Irish language today to refer to the whole island of Ireland.
Éire is also the official name of the state Ireland, which has sovereignty over most of the island of Ireland.
Susan: it’s very windy, cold and wet here.
never mind– Eire = Ireland– duh!
I wonder if I wore Orange and went into a bar today–Irish bar, how many people would throw mugs at me? Or would they even know?
That was interesting LDG—
The Starry Plow— where in Ireland so I don’t go there–
Well LDG–thanks for the clarification– and the lesson behind it–
So if someone put on orange and crossed over to the green side, big huge fight?
Do I have to look Eire up? Where is this?
@Patty
re: wrong color
Naw, don’t worry. It’s St. Patrick’s feast day… According to repute, the whole world is Irish for a day!
((grin))
Well LDG, i’m good for learning, i’ll go read it.
SINCE adam and robert have both forgot about us! *L*
Retread.. stopped the amnesty bill??? If you’rte referring to McCain/Kennedy, ok, but, We have 5 bills sitting on the house floor, all relating to amnesty and illegal immigration, Pelosi is stalling all of them, citing that Congress needs time to argue the issues… what she wants to do is added voting rights to 20 million illegals, she also wants to add that they receive social benefits…which in turn will help the democratic party. That’s not a done deal yet with the amnesty.
well crud, i put the wrong color on today! *L*
have never heard that btw.
@Susan-AZ
“Catholics wear green and the Protestants orange?”
No. It is incorrect, but that is how it is portrayed in much of modern media. The correct distinction is Green is associated with the nationalist movement in Irish history, and the modern Republican Irish both in Eire and in Northern Ireland. Orange is associated with the loyalist movement, loyal to the British Crown.
Here’s the specific origin of the Orange association, for those who actually want to see the details:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orange_Institution
Warning: Discussing this topic in a pub named “The Starry Plow” or some such is hazardous to your (or others) health.
Pretty appropriate– the talk about the Ulstermen and the color orange– Saint Patty’s Day–
Patty-
. Ulster - a historic division of Ireland located in the northeastern part of the island; six of Ulster’s nine counties are in Northern Ireland
Catholics wear green and the Protestants orange?
Adam– are you in Ireland?
LDG - understand. We have some in our family too….but not sure how much. Husband was thrilled when he found out he is 1/4 - he likes the dark beer!
Retread… in answer to your question about the superdelegates…
because it’s possible that McCain can beat Hillary, but less chances of beating Obama. If the superdelegates choose Obama, then it can screw the Republicans
oops– type
Isn’t that orange just worn around the collar- collarette tpye thing?
@Patty
“…i didnt understand…”
Please don’t feel bad, it is an anachronism pretty much these days. I hope my comment to Karen2 helped you get the gist of it.
@Karen2
“- wore orange -”
loyalist, rather than republican. The religious division is not quite absolute, and utterly inapplicable in my case. But to your point, yes, paternal line was all Ulstermen of the old school.
Put Pelosi in a ticket and it is the kiss of death…… her approval rating is lower than GWB’s!
Sounds like a good idea to me…….
Obama / Pelosi - she says I am old enough to be your mother - you listen to me.
Clinton / Pelosi - she says I am the prettier one - people will listen to me.
LDG..im slow here, i didnt understand the orange thing.
@Patty
“brussles for sprouts!
