10 Years of Peace
Coincidentally, our trip to Northern Ireland comes 10 years after the peace treaty and it’s getting some press here in Europe. In this day when bashing democracy seems to be quite normal in parts of the world, it seems democracy is winning and in some cases thriving. Yes a ton of money has been pumped into the north, but as one man told me “they are beginning to see that peace and prosperity solves a few problems.” He continued, “Many of the fighters are now politicians!”
Here’s an article on the issues. NORTHERN Ireland has enjoyed a massive fall in unemployment and an influx of new workers in the decade since the historic Good Friday agreement, new figures show.
It now outperforms every region of the UK except for the south-west, with only 4.2 per cent of its population out of work.
At the same time, the “peace dividend” has seen a long-standing pattern of emigration swapped for immigration, as it attracts migrants from new European Union member states such as Poland.
Figures from Westminster dramatically illustrate the effects on both sides of the religious divide since paramilitary action ended.
Some 18,558 people claimed unemployment benefit in the four Belfast parliamentary constituencies in January 1997.
But by January, this had fallen to 6,698 - an astonishing 64 per cent drop.
Across the province, around 100,000 more people are in work and the 4.2 per cent unemployment rate outperforms Scotland (4.9 per cent), the UK (5.2 per cent) and London (6.6 per cent).
Northern Ireland economics consultant John Simpson said the economic recovery had been “dramatic”. But he warned that the economic turn-around “cannot be date-stamped at Easter 1998″ and there was still widespread deprivation. Average weekly earnings in Northern Ireland stood at £330 last year - compared with £375 for the UK as a whole.
The figures emerged as politicians yesterday debated the legacy of the Good Friday agreement that restored - after several faltering starts - a devolved government and assembly to Northern Ireland.
The deal was struck in 1998 after many days and nights of painstaking negotiations and with the encouragement of the then prime minister Tony Blair and the former US president Bill Clinton.
The 108-member assembly took power in December 1999, though direct rule from London resumed temporarily in 2002 when devolution collapsed due to bitter arguments about the refusal of the IRA to decommission its weapons and the suspicion of a republican spy ring existing at Stormont.
Power returned in 2007 after an election left Ian Paisley’s Democratic Unionists and Martin McGuinness’s Sinn Fein in command. This saw men who were once the bitterest of enemies work alongside each other as First Minister and Deputy First Minister.
Concerns remain about the presence of sectarian hatred and violence. However, the Royal Ulster Constabulary, reformed as the Police Service of Northern Ireland, is well on its way to the target of having 30 per cent Catholic officers by 2011.
Of the 450 loyalist and republican prisoners released early under the Good Friday deal, only 20 have had their licences revoked.
In 2005 the IRA ended its armed campaign and British troops now number 5,000.
Billy Hutchinson, a former Progressive Unionist Party (PUP) assembly member from north Belfast, said: “Sectarianism is still alive and well. People are still living in disadvantage and the only thing changed is the more peaceful atmosphere.”
But former Northern Ireland minister Paul Murphy said: “The Good Friday agreement has most certainly stood the test of time. We must remember that without the agreement, none of this would have been possible.”
Memories of a new dawn
DAVID ANDREWS (Irish Government - Fianna Fail): “I remember politicians desperately trying to grab some sleep in the negotiation rooms as the deadline for agreement loomed.
“I also recall the conclusion was very sudden. I remember George Mitchell set the final deadline and then a phone call from (US President) Bill Clinton to (Ulster Unionist leader) David Trimble sealed the deal.
EILEEN BELL (Alliance Party): “I suppose one of the most striking memories I have is of some pretty senior republicans and loyalists queuing up for food that week and watching them engage each other in conversation. It may have only been only about the food, but it was remarkable to see former enemies engaging.”
MARTIN McGUINNESS (Sinn Fein): “After the agreement was forged… I ran into a republican ex-woman prisoner in my home city who had spent a long time in Armagh Jail and I asked her ‘What do you think?’
“Her response was ‘Martin, what do you think?’ and when I said I thought we had done the right thing, she said: ‘That’s all right for me’.
“I have to say it was bit scary and humbling that people were putting so much faith in our leadership.”
LIZ O’DONNELL (Irish Government - Progressive Democrats): “The people who made the greatest political sacrifices suffered most. I think history will be fairer to David Trimble.”

dEREK,
whey you finishing your book?
Where are all my comments going!
LDG-
I hope I am wrong about events leading up to it as well, but I think that most Americans are oblivious to the fact that there is an entire group of people that wants them dead.
The terrorists want all westerners dead, not just me, but my wife and children, my parents and friends, that want to destroy us and they would do anything to do it.
I think it is a matter of time before they ring that bell, and in all of their celebration at whatever victory they get against us, they will forget that the bell actually tolls for them.
I am looking up Pasdaran-
xxxxxxxxxx
@Susan-AZ
I wouldn’t be posting here if I didn’t think it was a good thing to ‘just do’. I’ll start billing you only if Marie starts doing so first ((grin)). Besides, it only becomes a problem when there are things I have to wait to become public knowlege before I can chat about them.
ok, off I go for now. perhaps I can look in here late your time.
((departs))
And yes– I was I was referring to the political groups– I think I was thinking more religion and not distinguishing–
thanks again!

good time to borrow money, eh? Yeah, not related to the defense issue, but important news on the exchange rate issue.
You be careful, friend. Not long now until that weather window opens.

“I am still reading here–
“I get so confused with the Shiites in Iraq and then the ones in Lebanon- who is what and where is what?”
Shi’a is just a term for one sect of Islam. If you mean the political groups in those two areas, then let’s just be blunt about it…
Iraq has 2 major Shi’a controlled Political factions in play right now. The SCII and its militancy (called the Badr Brigade(s) ); and the Sadrist movement and their militancy (called JAM, or the Mahdi Army). Both owe alot to Iran in their formation, but SCII is Iraqi nationalist while *the Sadrists are Iranian puppets*. Trained and armed by the Pasdaran, the Iranian Revolutionary Guardians Corps (IRGC).
Lebanon has a bunch of little Shi’a factions (like Shiite Amal) but they have one huge one: Hizuballah (Hezbollah). It is also an Iranian Puppet, and is run as an adjunct to the Pasdaran.
Oh Wow!!!! Max is on his way to see Adam!!
Greeting to you all!…I’ll check back later for updates ….Max will probably get his own thread here. lol
LDG–
You too–
I am still reading here–
I get so confused with the Shiites in Iraq and then the ones in Lebanon- who is what and where is what?

Have a good one!

Derek,
Do you ever notice how Nasrallah is a big baby and a woos , he his in hiding– with ants in his pants…..
oo and Wednesday — the airforce is coming to talk to us for a few hours— talk about their missions and all that
((distracted for a bit))
@Derek
I can well understand why you see it all that way. Here’s hoping you are wrong on it happening but right about how people in the “West” would react.
@Avi and Susan-AZ
FYI: Yes, Carmiel is well within range from Lebanon, even from launches north of the Litani River.
@Susan-AZ
mirin is the “cooking sherry” version of sweet ’sake’, it is used to balance the rougher ’sake’ and the saltiness of the soysauce.
An Oriental Grocery of some sort might have it for sale, even if they are mostly Korean or even Chinese style.
Avi–
I was looking up Carmiel– I found an article where a couple years ago Carmiel was hit by rockets-
I learned a new word- The shelter, known in Hebrew as a miklat—–
LDG-
You are right about the practicality, but I see this escalating until it is all out war in several countries, some of which we consider “friends”, I just don’t see where there is any other option, and it is going to be ugly.
I do not think that radical islam takes into account our resolve, they have not seen the full force of the united states military, and I am certain that the events that will lead up to all out war are going to be difficult to stomach. It is only a matter of time before they get “lucky” again and are able to orchestrate a real attack on us, not to say 9/11 was not real, and was not horrible, but with the technology to cause wide spread destruction out there and often times going to the highest bidder, I am afraid that they will be able to cause our country serious harm.
Then and only then, will radical islam see the sleeping giant awakened, and their destruction will be complete.
it is just how I see the state of affairs.
@Susan-AZ
Chocolate is yougashi but is incredibly popular here.
…and about natto: yes they start with Soy, just as they do for tofu and soysauce, but…
…it is *nothing* like either in finished product. It is pretty much the one Japanese food item I can nearly always count on to make a foreigner run away screaming.
Chicken Tatsuta (tatsuta is a way of cooking, a mild breading) is actually not very common, but yes, it is tasty.
4 chicken thighs
3 tbsps soy sauce
2 tbsps sake
1 tbsps mirin
2 tsps fresh ginger juice
1/3 cup corn starch/flour/Japanese katakuriko starch
vegetable oil for frying
Where do I get mirin? What is that?
I want to make this-
the sake– I get to drink the rest- LOL
Carmiel- A bit past Hafia not super north but North ….. i dunno exactly were but in that general area….
Purim ended yesterday …. now its no holiday lol
@Derek
leaving aside any practicality arguement, yours above ended well:
“…and our enemy views it as such.”
They (enemies) certainly do.
this one sounds good– Chicken Tatsuta
@Susan-AZ
The general way to offer “Happy … !” is to say omedetou. Making it specific to a Wedding Aniversary, or even a Birthday, is a bit more complex.
@Avi
Oh really? How far north?
Is Purim over with or still going?
AVI–
Don’t forget to take pictures and you forgot to say where North?
Wagashi
Japanese sweets are called wa-gashi in Japanese, and western-style sweets are called yo-gashi. Common ingredients for wa-gashi are rice flour, azuki (red beans), and sugar. Butter and milk are rarely used in wa-gashi cooking, so wa-gashi tends to be lower in fat than yo-gashi. Wa-gashi can be very sweet, so it goes well with strong green tea.
No chocolate?
natto > ??
natto and soy sauce are all made from soybeans.
umeboshi? salt pickled plums?
I am now looking at recipes– I like the Miso soup– almost like what you get here in Chinese restaurants-
Avi..up SO early, you poor thing! ha ha
the glass factory sounds interesting!!
avi-
be careful my friend, I do not think that most of the arab countries want an all out war with the west, and that is what they will get if Israel is openly attacked, I see the news and it worries me that these countries may really want to try something.
I am growing tired of the islamic world threatening to destroy Israel with every breath. I know it is not very comforting when you are the “tip of the spear”, but the United States will back Israel, my biggest hope is that nothing tragic happens to get us involved.
We really need to have a summit with all parties involved, we send condi, flanked by a general or admiral from every one of our forces, we invite, Iran, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Israel and every other country from the middle east:
we say, here is the scoop, we back Israel, tell your people to calm down and quit threatening bloodshed or we are going to use every weapon at our disposal to get it through their thick skulls, that war is not what they want, we are going to make them hate war so much, that even their childrens children (if they survive) will not utter the word “jihad”
Then we turn the time over the the military leaders:
Admiral: we have ships with nuclear technology in place, we will start with a 30 day bombardment of traditional weapons, on all strategic places, we will concentrate on your military, government, palaces and oil production plants.
General: We will blacken your skies with bombers and fighters, we have negotiated with European countries and will use their bases as refueling sites and to load more bombs, we will shoot any aircraft you have from the sky or blow it up on the ground, we will destroy anything that can be used as a landing strip.
General, we will land marines at every port, every access point to every country, we conquered the world about 50 years ago and our marines are antsy for an all out war.
General, we will bring back the old days of tank divisions, infantry divisions, and the cav, we will sweep through your countries like we did in WWII, killing anybody that is fighting and capturing anybody willing to give up.
These people need to know we mean business but I am afraid with the state of current affairs we are going to be nickel and dimed until we are in eventual all out war.
I have said before, radical islam is not just a 2 country fight, we just have 2 current boiling points, it is a world war and will be until it is rooted out of the shadows and killed.
Does it sound like a holy war? it does, and our enemy views it as such.
tomorrow = field trip to the north
they are taking us to see
old cars
a glass factory
honey factory
and a newspaper printing place ……

:(
and that means waking up early — then the usual 7 ! lol
the sukki part we are leaving at 6 45 am
Max..
I am glad for you!! Enjoy!!!

“” FEW DAYS.” MEANING THE ARAB SUMMIT IN SYRIA??”
Summit starts Saturday.
Adam phoned, GTG!
Bloody Easter Sunday in Iraq
It was a bloody day Sunday in Iraq as dozens of people died in a blaze of attacks around the country, and the death toll of U.S. troops killed there rose to 4,000.
Thirteen Iraqi soldiers met their deaths, and more than 40 were wounded, when a fuel tanker driven by a suicide bomber and loaded up with explosives, crashed into an army base in Mosul in northern Iraq early on Sunday morning.
A U.S. military statement issued Monday said a roadside bomb killed four U.S. soldiers in southern Baghdad Sunday. The casualties raise the U.S. military death toll in Iraq during the past five years to 4,000. The statement said at least one coalition soldier was wounded in the bombing.
Elsewhere, twenty three Iraqis out shopping were gunned down in a hail of bullets at a Baghdad market from gunmen in cars passing by. Seven were killed and 16 seriously wounded.
Another 15 people were killed, including eight civilians, in rocket and mortar attacks on Baghdad’s Green Zone.
At least five people died when a suicide bomber struck a lineup outside a gas station in the Shula district of Baghdad, police said.
A roadside bomb killed five Iraqi soldiers close to the city of Kirkuk, and at least 3 people died when a suicide car bomber drove his vehcile into the house of a tribal leader near Samara.
Separately, the U.S. military says seventeen insurgents have been killed and 30 detained in weekend raids across Iraq.
It says the deadliest incursion was an operation Sunday targeting a suspected suicide bombing network east of Baqouba that killed twelve armed men.
The military says those killed in the raid were insurgents, including 6 who had shaved their bodies apparently in preparation for suicide operations.

Colombia confirms one Ecuadorian among dead in cross-border raid
Venezuela Star
Monday 24th March, 2008
(IANS)
Colombia has confirmed that an Ecuadorian was among the more than 20 killed in a cross-border air strike against leftist Colombian rebels in Ecuador, an admission that is likely to further strain already tense relations between the two countries.
Defence Minister Juan Manuel Santos Sunday said that one of the bodies brought back to Bogota after the March 1 attack had been identified as an Ecuadorian citizen but warned Ecuador not to take any drastic action as a result.
‘I have told President (Rafael) Correa and the Ecuadorian authorities to keep a watchful eye and to not be robbed of their good faith by a few criminals,’ Santos told reporters here.
The controversial strike, which targeted Raul Reyes, the second-in-command of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), prompted a serious crisis in relations between Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela.
Both countries mobilised troops along their borders with Colombia and broke diplomatic ties, but the tensions appeared to have eased in the last two weeks amid reconciliatory moves from all sides at a summit in Rio de Janeiro and in talks at the Organisation of American States in Washington.
But Ecuador’s President Rafael Correa warned Saturday that the crisis could be reopened if it was confirmed that an Ecuadorian was indeed among the dead in the strike.
Santos again defended Colombia’s attack as ‘legitimate acts of war, legitimate acts in defence of democracy’.
Colombian commandos entered Ecuador’s territory after the initial air strike and retrieved the bodies of Reyes and another man initially identified as a FARC member known as Julian Conrado. Forensic examinations had now revealed the second man to be an Ecuadorian, Santos said.
Avi: Yes.
LDG: No thanks, we get enough rain.
@Max
sorry joe no snow. I might have a spare monsoon in a couple months, if that would suit?
@Susan-AZ
“Do you two go out to celebrate? I also want to know what kind of Japanese food do you eat?”
Yes, we’ll be going out on Saturday. As to “what kind of Japanese food…”, I posted above on that:
Comment by LDG March 23rd, 2008 at 12:21 pm
If your daughter has gone Vegan, Indian cuisine is the way to go. There are lots of tofu-based Japanese dishes, but almost all of them use a broth or fatty oil that is fish-based.
Derek:
While at the airport the other day we took in the free photo exhibit. There was one photo of a mountainous ridge in Utah. I don’t remember the name, but it was absolutely marvelous in its stark beauty! All I remember of Utah are the salt flats that I saw from the train… another spot to add to my “places to visit” list!
Hi all… hope you had a lovely Easter.
max,
you really live in a place called notting hill??? lol
Susan,
Nasrallah heaps threats and abuse on Israel to mark Mughniyeh memorial
March 24, 2008, 6:30 PM (GMT+02:00)
Addressing a memorial rally from a huge video screen in S. Beirut, the Hizballah leader said Monday, March 24: “In a few days Israel will discover its mistake in killing Imad Mughniyeh. Boasting of “our culture of death.” He went on to shout: “We will choose the target, the time and the place to avenge him. The Israelis have cause for worry. It is possible that Israel will cease to exist in the present generation.”
” FEW DAYS.” MEANING THE ARAB SUMMIT IN SYRIA??
Susan: He said he’d be 15 minutes, but i think he overestimated the truthfulness of tourist bus time sheduals. So if he was crawling he may well have got here sooner.
The only costume I have seen Adam wear is when he dressed as Elvis– but he didn’t fit the part as Adam is too much in shape–
Max–
Is he crawling to Notting Hill?
patty-
I have heard that during adams “full monty” days, he favored dressing up as dan rather, then stripping down to just a microphone the the soundtrack of star wars, a bit unorthodox, but the ladies loved it. When he met tamera it was a real “pretty woman” incident, where she just hired him for one date, he won her heart and she swept him a way from his “lifestyle”
Maybe I am wrong, but it cracks me up to think about it.
LDG–
Thanks for the anniversay date– My friend Lydia’s, Puerto Rican, birthday in on the 29th so this will be an easy date to remember-
Do you two go out to celebrate? I also want to know what kind of Japanese food do you eat? In case I go to a Japanese restaurant to eat? My daughter is coming over Wednesday and we were talking about eating Indian food– she is a vegan so I am looking at Indian restaurants in this area but I think we will have to go into Phoenix as these are where the restaurants are–
xxxxx
Susan: Yes, apprently he’d been emailing
