Sports on Sunday is back, heck why not? Whether you are a sports fan or not, we’ve got to have one day to show our colors and root for our teams. So, each week after 6 days of mostly serious stuff I will post a sports thread like this one to allow all of us to talk a little trash (nicely) about our various teams and schools. Yep… the Giants have won more games already than I expected all year. Of course since I am the author I will error on the side of the left coast and north of Los Angeles, except Pepperdine. This video I grabbed earlier in the week when I headed out to the ‘Dine’ for an afternoon affair. What an amazing day to catch ‘America’s Pastime’ with two of the better teams in the country. UCLA came up the coast and left with a loss. Any game between southern California teams is always an important game. So, here is some video and….I can’t believe it has been more than 10 years since I pitched here. WOW…time flies, but thankfully in this yard the balls don’t. I am a pitcher.

Looks like fun. At one point i heard a voice like Tamara’s. Was she there with you?
Max-
You are good! She was sitting next to me.
Adam
Israel just lost the Europe final 4 to Russia ( Basketball)
baseball and a tie? you take the game way to serious Adam! *L*
oh, did your bro Arik go to Pepperdine also?
YEP! Arik graduated a couple of years after I did.
Adam
Hey Adam–
I was here many hours ago and saw these posts!! Allow me to be number 6-
Who is Doc. Sexton for starters?
Your dine affair explains your tie on the video— LOL—- Or not?
But my most favorite part about the video is when you pointed out the Pacific with the field dominating the picture!
You like the ocean?
xxxx
Chuck D.
Adam does not include D/Backs as one of the better two teams?
Adam:
Have some heart– they are trying! Every team is good– some just don’t make it! LOL
Susan-
He is a prof. at Pepperdine and a big supporter of the baseball team.
Adam
Personal note–
Doctor Sexton is a bit arrogant! Must be a man thing!
xxxxxx
And Adam—
on even more personal note, Max and I, personally got to met you in different circumtances- Mine was NFL Experience, lots of activity and hype, but what I saw or sensed in you, was your very casual and acceptance of your surroundings. (Not a snob).
Max probably sensed this too– You were dogged tired and yet you all spent some time together! (Tamera, you, and him). This was way cool!
And this is how I know you!
xxxxx
Susan: Yep, neither Adam nor Tamera seemed in anyway pompous or arrogant.
Thanks Max
Adam
All,
look out for ” BIG news” coming out of Israel in the next 48 hours or so…. the gag order on the PM’s investigation is partially going to be lifted and they are saying its going to be ugly on him…..
I doubt the Olmert will resign this week because of Israels 60th the govt and himself will probably collapse in the next 2 weeks…..
It might sound like domestic issues but theres an international affect
Once hes out i believe elections take place after 90 days and if Bibi Netanyau or Ehud Barak get elected they are much stuffer on Iran and terrorism then Olmert so that should be interesting …and if Bibi gets elected you can say bye bye to the 2008 dream of peace …..
Max,
your James Bond ( M16) guy is coming to Israel for a briefing with his israeli counterpart for a debrief on Iran …
ooo isnt this Good News …nootttt
09:12 Iran Foreign Min.: Iran rejects incentive package that violates our interests (Reuters)
and this wow
10:37 Iran suspends talks with U.S. over security in Iraq (AP)
Max–
I know–
Laid back cool guy!
Avi–
Help! Distress! Israel, Pakestein, et al! W
@Avi
re: “Big News out of Israel”
Thank you for posting that for us All. It should be interesting to watch, for sure.
post went through, without me finishing!!!!!!!!
Avi—
I would love for us to just get along! Not possible?
there you are LDG!
More chara going on in Israel?
@Susan-AZ
re: Avi’s posting? — domestic politics there are often nasty. It matters to us outsiders mostly in how it influences who runs the Government in Israel.
@Susan-AZ, if you look here first
replied to you over on “Border Battle”. Rest Well!
((departs))
LDG & Avi-
This is all NOT good news. I wonder if Iran is hoping to pick a fight. Hoping that Net gets elected?
Adam
Adam I love it! Please post more fun at sports! There is nothing like a good game!
True Story……..( I hope you realize any statement that starts like this is a lie )….Satan challenged St Peter, of Heaven’s fame, to a friendly baseball game to see who had acquired the best players over the years. They agreed to play the game at a nuetral site and Pepperdine University was chosen to host the event…….citing that Pepperdine lies somewhere between heaven and hell.
St Peter warned Satan that they had the best of the best when it came to players and coaches…….and boasted of having Him on his side thus confidently predicting a victorious outcome for his team.
“That’s all right”, answered Satan, “You may have the best players, but we’ve got all the umpires”
Good morning BTW
John-
NICE!!!!! LOL
Adam
Avi: I’d have thought MI6 would have met them often to discuss Iran, maybe this time is just official. Or do you mean the actor? Then maybe the next James Bond movie would be about Iran.
John: Good one.
Everyone-
I am going to post a sports note…since only John and Susan have really said anything about sports. The Waves lost to San Diego, The Giants lost in Philly, The Sharks lost in Dallas in 4 overtimes….thankfully the A’s got me a W!!
Adam
@Adam Housley
Sorry to hear your teams were 1-4 on the day. I did have the pleasure(?) of watching all of the Sharks-Stars game on the feed… that was a game for the ages! …but a darn shame SJ couldn’t take it to the 7th game of the series (33 years and all that, if you have been hearing the lore).
…now the NHL in the West is left with Stars (amazing, but not my team) and… the
Dead ThingsRed Wings…(Oh, and thanks for the gentle nudge about staying on topic on active threads here… after where the Drug Subs thread went, it is a good reminder to us digressors)
Adam - Happy Cinco de Mayo!!! (I’ve already made the flan, tacos & taquitos later along with homemade guacamole from CA avocados)
Fun video! What a view too! Where you munching on roasted peanuts?
I think our days at the baseball field are over. Our boys have decided to stick with football and wrestling. Saturday, they brought home 2 golds and 1 silver in a tournament. I’m pulling for my HOME team. lol
Sunshine-
NICE! Congrats on the medals.
Adam
Oh yea, I did go to an Orlando Predator’s game (arena football) on Saturday night! It was fun! Yes, they won!!!
BTW, it was San Jose that Orlando beat!
Yeah, I forgot that one. So we went 1-5. Not a great sports day.
Adam
Marlines wooped the San Diego Padres 10 -3
OUCHHH! go Marlinness
go Marlins!! hee hee.
John - ha ha! funny
Pistons beat the Magic in game 1 but here’s hoping that doesn’t happen again tonight. Since they (Magic) are wanting/getting a new arena in Orlando, they better win and I don’t just mean tonight’s game or the taxpayers of Orlando aren’t going to be too happy with them. I must say that I think the “O-rena” they play in now is very nice!
michellemalkin.com/2008/05/05/officer-down-philly-policeman-executed-by-bank-robbers-in-muslim-garb/
Since we’re not digressing today……….locally up here in the Baltimore/DC/Richmond area……The Nationals finished an 8 win, 3 loss homestand, not bad for a team that started off struggling somewhat at the beginning of the season.
The Redskins had a three day mini-camp with their new head coach Jim Zorn…….only real news here is that their 2nd round draft pick missed Sunday’s session……he overslept. Not good to oversleep on only your third day on the job. Maybe we’ll be lucky though and he’ll turn out to be a “sleeper” of the draft.
And, Kyle Bush spun out Dale Earnhard Jr in the closing laps of the Nascar race on Saturday night. Thanks Kyle, you the man. It’s not that I hate Dale Jr, I just like to hear his fans b#tch and moan when they think the allmighty one was done wrong……..fans, take some advice from Kenney Chesney and ‘have another beer in Mexico’………
John-
Wow. That was one of the more normal posts you have made in recent months. Congrats.
Adam
Adam: I knew it! But I wasn’t sure if it was just someone with a similar accent.
I can’t really comment on US sports, since we only get Eurosports on our cable, and reading about sports isn’t as much fun as watching them.
Max-
You can follow Rodeo!!
Adam
it won’t post my comments again!
oh, darn, spoke too soon.
Adam-
More reminiscing for you ….I was in Lakeland early April
http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/ii173/jlskylog/April2008LakelandFlorida159Large.jpg
My baseball team are the Cincinnati Reds…they are due for a comeback…we’ve been waiting over 30 years for another Big Red Machine!
But it doesn’t look like it will be this year either. They are tied with San Diego for the worst record. pitiful.
Other sporting news- my pick - Eight Belles — how tragic!
Jen S……I didn’t see the Derby, but did see the highlight (or lowlights) in the case of Eight Belles. I also see that PETA is all over this, demanding a full investigation and penalties to be imposed. I do not follow horse racing……so I have to ask, is what happened to Eight Belles common in horse racing and are these horses indeed over trained and run too hard, causing these life ending injuries?
Go TIGERS!! OK, they’re still not where some of us hoped they’d be, but somewhat better than they were at the start! I’ll be at Comerica this weekend, hoping to see them beat the Yankees….if their pitching holds up…
John
No horse racing expert here; but from what I heard this is not a common occurrence.
I am anxious to talk to my sister-in-law about it; she is the real horse racing buff. She wasn’t able to go this year –my husband and I just went to the local track in our area to watch and bet.
I’ve never given any in depth thought to this, like many others I guess, until something like this happens. I find nothing wrong with the sport unless I learn of some Real inhumane treatment.
They pick healthy horses and ones that can and will run is all I ever thought.
One article I read was interesting…. ‘what if this had happened to the horse that came in last? We probably would have read one paragraph about it.’
I was thinking —what about the football player who plays until his knees are nothing but brittle sticks that no longer bend and boxers who get their brains mashed to mush? That is more common I think. and the race car drivers that go 150 mph and one slip could cause multiple deaths or injury…on and on.
Abolish all sporting events? Ha! Of course Peta has no interest in these animals.
I am no horse racing expert either but I think the issue is why did this happen and why was it not stopped?
The issue would be was the horse too young, I am not sure the age of eight belles, but they have her reported as a filly, that is typically a horse under the age of 4, most horses are still developing until 2 1/2 or 3, and then building muscle until 5 or 6. So would she have sustained those injuries if she had been allowed more time to develop before being raced?
Also, when did the fractures occur? if the jockey suspected something mid race, he should have stopped, dismounted, and gotten medical attention for the animal. That is difficult, but jockeys are paid very well to know their animal.
It is very tragic, eight belles was beautiful.
Jen……I agree, PETA is all about themselves and their usually misguided agendas………Local law offials here, after a rash of vandalisms against medical laboratories that conduct drug testing on animals (mainly mice and rats), likened the organization to any other terrorist group and wanted them classified as such so as that they could charge them with a felony versus misdameanor charges. Soon after these announcements were made the vandalisms stopped.
On a lighter note there’s a lesser known PETA organization out there that we hardly ever hear about……..People Eating Tasty Animals.
yeah…peta is a joke
I hate real abuse of animals, when I was a kid, I was at my friends house, we were only about 7 or 8, when his pet rabbit escaped, his dad came our with a bow, shot the rabbit through the leg, and then skinned the rabbit alive, I ran home and my dad (an avid hunter) heard about it, walked over to their house, asked the dad what was wrong with him? and then beat the crap out of him for doing it.
Peta is dumb, and they go overboard, in the other direction.
I eat meat, but I think it is our responsibility to be kind and humane.
Derek-
That story was brutal. I do agree with your thoughts, there is nothing wrong with being humane, within reason. Sometimes I hear stories that people try to pass and the humane claim can go a bit far, but not always.
Adam
Derek……..you bring up some interesting questions. Although we do not seem to hear it too often, we do hear about these racing stables having to put down a horse because of leg injuries every now and then. Yes, accidents happen, but I would hate to see a horse, or any other animal, be destroyed because it was driven beyond it’s physical means just to please us. The horse can’t tell us that it’s leg is not feeling well today………….Well, I guess Mr Ed could but……
Hum, sports and no digression? Dang, are we all being punished? *L*
I’m not the sports fan till college basketball comes back, but i wanted to say HIYA! *waving*
Now I”ll go back to being good. ha
I’m sorrrrrry….
I’ve never been much a sports fan…..
not much to say about the matter…… not being much of a team player today, huh!!
what I was a kid we were always stuck watching tennis on TV….
then I was married to an ex baseball player… but I had to stay home w/ the baby … didn’t get to run around w/ him…
I like football parties.. but it’s fun for the food!
Wondering - is horse racing a sport? How about NASCAR? Both are reported in the sports section of the paper…
JoAnne-
excellent question, I wonder what defines sports as well? I am active in “other sports” i.e. kayaking, rock climbing, canyoneering, snowboarding, white water rafting, and other outdoor sports.
I run a lot, and I am athletic, put I do not consider myself an “athlete”. I would think that jockeys and drivers, exert a lot during their “sports” and there is no doubt, they possess skill…but I do not consider them athlete’s, in the same way I do not consider myself an athlete.
JoAnne & Derek-
You guys can comment on anything you think is sport. Fine with me. Climb away!

how can people be soooooooooooooooooooooooo cruel??????????????
and I am still bumming out about that poor horse…..
ha, is blogging a sport?
People Eating Tasty Animals <————-clever John

Patty-
yep blogging is a sport. Are brains are mush, our fingers are weak and brittle and at the end of the day we crash and burn.
I think i’m a part of People Eating Tasty Animals too.
But i try to eat as much of the animal as possible, and larger animals, so i eat less animals.
Or what about PETV
People for the Ethical Treatment of Vegetables.
Cabbages have feelings too!
terri-
sorry about the story, it was traumatic when it happened.
I am not an animal fanatic in any way, but I cannot tolerate animals being abused, in any way. Now that I am bigger and stronger than I was at 9, I can step in and stop it.
I have 2 bad events from my childhood that now make me unable to ignore situations.
One was that rabbit…I cannot look the other way, when I see it. I have to stop it.
The other was domestic violence, when I saw a man beat up a woman, I was maybe 6 or 7 when that happened. I am unable to stop myself from getting involved.
I cannot sit by, pretend it did not happen, say its none of my business, or any of that. I se it, I stop it.
I have been in fist fights over it, I have had knives and guns pulled on me over it, and I have gone to jail over getting involved…but I am physically unable to turn away from it…I have to stop it.
John - Not much of a Jr. fan either but certainly NOT a Kyle Bush fan either. He was acting like a big baby after the Nationwide series race Friday night. Then he goes on to call the other guy “immature”. lol Too bad good ol’ Mark Martin couldn’t pull out the win. Finished in 3rd which is darn good actually but I hope to see him gets a few wins. He IS respected among the drivers.
Max - tooooo funny!!! “eat larger and more of the animal” so you eat less animalS. ha ha! I’ll have to remember that one. lol
John - Gator tail is good but I don’t know about the rest of him. hmmmm I wonder what happens to the rest of him. Must not taste too good.
sorry John …I meant Max
Max - going along with your idea of not wasting any parts of the animal…that’s what bologna’s for right? And hog head cheese too right?
The Top Ten Bits of Wisdom from Dr. Bob Sexton:
10. There is nothing quite like the great American pastime — supply side economics.
9. Best movie ever made? “The Benchwarmers.”
8. Best actor ever? Me, Karl’s Asst. Coach…in “The Benchwarmers.”
7. Best Internet Movie Database page ever? http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2200608/
6. Best quote from a movie? Remember “Top Gun?” I think it went like this: “Gentlemen, there are only two respectable jobs in this world: a fighter pilot and a economist.”
5. Always stretch out before you work out. If I had known this in my earlier days, I might not have torn my hamstring and I’d be a Federal Reserve governor now.
4. The law of diminishing marginal utility? That has nothing to do with mediocre players.
3. Pitchers might own the plate, but when you’re up to bat you gotta own that Edgeworth box.
2. Three pitches to look for: the fastball, the knuckler and the supply curve.
1. Housley? Taught him everything he knows.
Jeff-
You said it all!
Adam
Sunshine: I’d like to try gator. The rest of the gator doesn’t have much meat on t. I guess it gets turned into boots and bags.
That’s what blood sausage is for as well.
And a single cow can provide enough meat for a single person for 3-4 years.
A Chicken can only last a week. So that’s 155 to 207 lives saved.
Max
Are you student of Dr. Sextons? ha ha
The #1 of Jeff’s is way nice!!!!!
If he said that, he is a good guy!
Is it Football Season yet?
GO GATORS!!!!!!!
I have eaten Gator..and for that matter rattlesnake. It all tastes like chicken. Doesn’t everything?
Adam
Jen: cute cartoon.
I’m just good at math and love meat
Cows can grow up to 4000lb in weight, but rarely would they be allowed to reach such sizes. Most of the time they have about 300lb of meat when it comes to slaughter, in intensive farming they are still calfs.
Though with the growth in popularity of grass fed cattle that will change; it is healthier for you, apparently they are very high in Omega-3 fatty acids, the super fat found in wild salmon. Grass fed cattle are allowed to reach maturity before being turned into meat, so are much larger, 1300 to 1900 lb, not all of that would be useable, but you’d be able to feed a lot of people with just one.
The average yearly consumption is about 70lb, around 1/5lb a day.
