CALIFORNIA FIRE UPDATE!

LATEST UPDATE!

6:10pm As I type this, air support has just arrived for the first time today. Still heavy smoke, but a small clearing allows a couple to drop.

Finally the new evacuations are in an area down the hill from Paradise. The truck and AM crew will pass near these areas in the AM, highway 70 will be a safe route, but they could move to this location instead of Concow. Has to be an AM call because the fire will move tonight after we are gone.

4:50pm. I have been told several instances of pot farms, both in the field and in one case in a home, we left to burn. There was a fear they had been booby trapped.

Firefighters are also worried about some cars and homes that MAY contained burned bodies. The coroner and sheriff are investigating. No confirmation, but prepare for the possibility.

3:45. I have been told by the assistant sheriff that they are preparing for the possibility of 19,000 more evacs. That’s IF the winds come back. They are expected again soon … according to forecasts. We all know about that reliability.

If they do evacuate, they are discussing the possibility of using ARCO Arena in Sacramento. It’s about an hour and a half south of here and that is only IF all of Paradise and Magalia is evacuated. Right now 10,000 evacuated and more than 25,000 remain.

1:58. We are now across the river, down Concow Road. Here we have found a new line cut by a bulldozer. The fresh reddish dirt intermixed with torn blackberry bushes and pine branches. A fire crew from Monterey California is using hose lines to keep the fire out of the trees, at the same time letting it burn the fuel low to the ground.

1:18. We have driven on an old rocky/bumpy fire road down the ridge from Paradise. Below me about a quarter mile, the Feather River, with the fire stretched all along the banks on the other side. No air support can get in here I am told. The smoke is just too thick.

12:34.
We complete our first satellite live report in front of the Feather River Hospital, where all patients have been evacuated.

The area is still very smokey and my nostrils burn from the smoke and soot.

12:18pm. The satellite truck has finally found a clearing through the trees to hit a satellite. I got him to park alongside a fire truck from San Bruno California, he’s out of the way, but we are in a good location. While cables are being run, we get a quick interview with some firefighters. One tells me when the wind kicks up, “it’s like blowing fist-sized hand grenades of fire.”

Thankfully right now the wind is calm, but the fire burns and forecasts are for strong winds this afternoon. It has become a waiting game on this sleeping giant fire. The front line is burning long and low. If and when the wind returns, the fire will again be in the tall trees. Right now because of the smoke, there is no air support, which means it is man versus fire on the ground here. The temperature hovers near 100 and I feel no humidity.

11:35 Our vendor satellite truck is now in place. We had to find a clearing wide enough to get out a satellite signal and we found that at the Feather River Hospital, which is now evacuated.

The patients were rushed out of here in the middle of the night as the fire raged in the canyon below. We are standing only a mile or so from the front line, but you wouldn’t know it because we can’t see a thing other than thick falling ash covering everything.

11:15 We arrive in the Paradise area, actually we pass through the first checkpoint. I have driven these roads many times before, the town is built amongst tall pines, oaks and brush. Because of this terrain and fauna, it’s tough to tell that 30,000 people live here. Right now I am told 10,000 have been evacuated. It’s an eerie feel, the smoke thick amongst the trees and I see no cars, no people, no animals. The sun is obscure and it is snowing ashes.

8:58am Tom and I are on the road, headed north on the 99 freeway, which runs along the east side of the central valley here in the Golden State. I know this area well, since I began my first TV job here 10 years ago.

5:48am The bag is packed and I am at LAX trying to get on the next flight to Sacramento. Tom Whitaker, our San Francisco photographer, is meeting me at the airport.

4:24am The call comes. A fire burning near Paradise California has destroyed 40 homes and threatening thousands more.

Patty-

Thanks for yet another interesting yet frightening article. I am glad nobody was seriously hurt. I have always thought that skydiving is a dangerous sport to try, i commend whoever has the courage to try it. Its up there with riding those flimsy private planes. You heard about crashes that happen to those planes all the time in the news.

did you guys see this?

man they were lucky injuries weren’t worse.

Susan-

It must have been a long trip for you. I know that visiting Hawaii is awfully long also, the plane ride takes at least 6 hours. I am guessing you stayed less than a day there? I hope you got to see the local culture in Tahiti, and the dance troupes there, not to mention the local beer, Hinano Tatihi. Did you happen to get a taste of it?

Patty-

I have to respectfully disagree with you. I do think most of the problems with our society nowadays are because of the liberal way of thinking. People are becoming to open minded, and often times that can be a bad thing. Plus the liberal AP press didnt have the common courtesy to show Tony Snow some respect after his passing. They had to blatently critique him, as well as say other nasty stuff.

re: “I am sure LDG has seen this link you posted? Comments I hope by LDG.”

well, yes, I have read that story.

Technically, using the symbology of the Red Cross / Red Crescent in a ruse of war is a violation of the Geneva Conventions (those regarding medical aid and the treatment of combatants in wartime).

The International Committee of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies has a legitimate claim against the Government of Colombia for misrepresenting them, but that is a matter between those two entities.

Where the issue gets murky, legally speaking, is that the FARC are not a “lawful” or recognized combatant, so it is not clear at all that such protections apply to them. “Telling lies to deceive liars” may in fact be acceptable, and all that implies…

brad..not everything that goes wrong in this world can be attached to liberal bashing. Sometimes it’s just stupidity vs common sense, regardless of any affiliation. but i think i said that before.

*L* @ Aunt Jen! You might be slow on the “number jokes”, but your quick with the words!

Adam..*VBS*….your a doll! So now that i feel a little guilty (even if it is a little premature) can i say that we appreciate all you do, and the patience you show us here! You’ve always been very gracious to let us have our way, so to speak. Please don’t let a few bad apples make the rest of us suffer. We don’t make very good “test subjects”, so cut that cr*p out! ;-)

Here’s a cute one that will show where your mind is at………..

What’s a four lettered word for a woman that ends in “…UNT”?

the Unión Nacional de Trabajadores de Venezuela (UNT)? and then add the other missing letter and this would be Eva Gollinger?

Did I get it right?

I so agree with you! Colombia went to extreme measures to get these prisoners out and did a lot of fudging and faking! That article is nothing but chara!

Brad– Patty posted the story about the Girl Scout brownies and I had a great time in Tahiti! (Not Hawaii) Short but sweet! :D

Jen– let us set up a thread of poetry! I still remember the one you posted around Xmas time– that one was way cool!

Thanks for that article. I totally agree with you, i dont see what the big deal. This the exact type of thing that is reported on these liberal networks. As long as all the hostages were able to get out safe and sound, who cares about the strategy used to do it?

That article you posted about the Girl Scouts is really strange. I guess it was all a cover for illegal drug activity.

I guess you had a wonderful time during your visit to Hawaii yesterday, am i correct?

If i ever come across any interesting Britney news, i will be sure to pass it along to you. I think she is currently filming a news music video with Madonna. It looks she is getting her life back together and well on her way to a comeback.

Awesome poem, also. I guess we have a ton of talented poem writers here on the blog :)

How is the weather in Florida? I heard its very similar to Hawaii. I know Hawaii is hot and humid all year round, from the several times i visited there.

I bet you saw all the places in Miami where the classic Miami Vice show was filmed, am i correct?

Hey Susan and everyone-

Speaking about Adam not posting any celeb news.

Did you all hear about what happened with Miley, and those racy pics that are circulating, thanks to a hacker of her cell phone?

It was on the live desk this afternoon, plus on nancy grace.

As for what happened to Miley, its really sad.

i thought miley would have learned her lesson from the other pics, but i guess not. Half the times Miley has done this, people made a huge deal when the photo’s weren’t even bad. I will admit, that the first photo of these photo’s is bad, but we don’t even know if it’s real or fake. If it is real, i’d be a little upset but I still won’t hate on her for it. The whole Vanity Fair controversy was just the beginning of a more deeper problem with her.

Comment by Brad

Susan-

Are you talking about Britney Spears? I always like to read up on the latest celeb gossip news in my spare time. Its always entertaining to see all the crazy antics the famous people get themselves into.

LOL, you definately should, mowing the lawn on a hot summer day sure takes a lot of energy out of a person :)

I highly doubt it, he just wants to make himself look good. The New Yorker satire cartoon is nothing to what us conservatives have to deal with on a daily basis, look at all the political cartoons you see in local newspapers everyday? They all make fun of GW Bush or some Republican.

John-

The only thing i could think of that could spell the end of the world in 2012, would be if another terrorist act happens here on the US. I hope and Pray it doesnt, and GW Bush is responsible for it. Why do you think we have be safe for over 7 years. I am afraid if BHO or some liberal becomes President, he will talk to rogue leaders like the one in Iran, and put our country in great danger.

I hope you still manage to drink about 8 cups of water daily. Of course not all at once, but throughout the day. Its to keep your body healthy.

Brad……………..2012, the end of the world?…….Maybe, because my prediction is it will be the year that Brittney Spears is elected to the highest office in the land. Her newly founded B.O.O.B.S ( Bureaucratic Oligarchy Of Brothers and Sisters ) party will win in a landslide……..literally. Record rains in California will produce a magnitude of landslides never seen before in history, thus preventing voters from going to the polls in November. The loss of California will put her on the top ( a first for her ) and secure the election.

I heard that drinking too much water at one time, can be fatal. It was on the Master Baden segment on Red Eye last week.

Also remember that lady who entered a radio station contest in CA, who died also from drinking too much water.

I wouldnt worry about it too much, drinking 8 cups of water is good for your health, it keeps you kidneys healthy, among other things. I guess its how much you drink at one time. That is why a person needs to drink throughout the day, especially in these long summer months.

Patty-

I totally agree with what you said. You are an optimistic person, you never let all these news scare you. I have seen tons of end of the world videos on youtube. I guess certain people on there have nothing better to do with their time.

I remember the Y2K– Water and candles were in the business– I didn’t buy any of these- I figured I would use someone’s pool if I needed water! I went about that day as a regular day– and here I am today! LOL

Speaking of water– I was watching the weather channel– here are some tidbit morsels for thought- If every household used one gallon less a day of water, by the end of the year, Lake Erie could be filled up three times! No showers for us today! I am contributing! LOL

What do you all think about that shocking report on Geraldo about the world coming to an end in 2012?

I personally dont think thw world is going to end, but with all the chaos happening around the world, not to mention we live in a post 9/11 world. I think its safe to say the world isnt as peaceful as it used to be. But you hear about these Apocalyptic theories a lot, it reminds me of those Weekly World News publications.

I remember when Y2K was getting closer, everybody was so worried that entire cities would be left in the dark, not to mention computers were going to go haywire. But look, we pulled through it just fine.

But if the world were able to end, i would probably live life to the fullest. Cherish each and every day that you have with your friends and family. Gain enough knowledge and wisdom so you will be better of in the future.

I would also do every aspirations known to man. Maybe travel the world, go bungee jumping, go on a cruise ship, etc.

It would be like that movie with Jack Nicholson, “The Bucket List”.

A great movie, that teaches us that you are never too old or young to chase your dreams.

I think living in in a fire zone is definately more dangerous. Because being in a tornado you can take precautions. With a fire, there are definately more health hazards. Breathing the bad air isnt really good either.

I hope you are staying away from the terrible flooding in Tempe AZ. I saw some pics on the internet, it looks like a river out there.

I think that BHO is totally out of touch with everyday Americans, and its showing more everyday. I highly doubt Iran is going to stop their nuclear testing with sanctions. We need watch Iran closely, before they bomb us or Israel. And we cant let that happen, especially with a rouge leader that runs that country.

I read somewhere that BHO already has dabbled with drugs during his youth, plus i also heard a while back on a liberal network that BHO is a cigarette smoker.

I sure hope you havent tried any of those things.

I know what you mean, Red Eye is very funny, but Andy Levy is what makes the show. His jokes are hilarious.

I heard that Gregs sidekick, Bill Schulz, writes most of the jokes.

Sometimes i wonder if that is really Gregs mother, it looks like the pic is, but i wonder if its an actress playing her?

I guess you cant believe everything you see on tv commercials these days, its just like that leather mender ad. I wonder how it it repair those damaged cuts instantly? Its like magic.

I know, some of the great anchors came from that other liberal network. Jamie Colby is a perfect example. Randi Kaye is an exceptional journalist, she reminds me of Janice Dean. Why do you hate Nancy Grace? She is just passionate about what she does, and is a avocate for victims rights.

Love that pic, its LOL funny, it looks like its from a political cartoon from the newspaper.

Criss Angel is still around, i hope he doesnt get hurt, simply because of all the dangerous stunts and illusions he does.

I guess you all heard about Budeweiser finally being sold to that foreign Belgium company that was pursuing them. Brad, I have many grief poems saved here. When our daughter was killed, other’s words were what kept us going someday. When i ran across the Dr Suess one, i was really having a tough time, so i forced myself to read it everyday. Eventually it got to the point that it was right, not cause it said so, but because my heart ache was better. I finnally was able to grasp what it was trying to tell me. One thing i have learned is that sometimes we have to step back out of box and look in through the eyes of a child to find the livable perspective.

Its great to you are a dog lover, now you can convince others like yourself to vote for McCain, because he is leading among that category.

I wonder if David Copperfield got off, simple because he is a celeb. That always happens to rich and powerful entertainers.

Criss Angel is my favorite magicians. Ever seen his show on A/E Network?

I dont think you should go into a homicidal rage, if you see someone in need or animal cruelity. but you must do everything you can to help. But not at the expensive of getting yourself in hot water or possibly killed.

That is really awful, i am sure your dog has lived a long and healthy life.

And it is miracle, maybe the people working at the hospice must be using that Joint and Muscle spray from Dr. Frank. you see those commericials on FNC late at night all the time.

And your Prayers and Faith in God always helps also.

By any chance watch Red Eye? If not, you definately should. I think its on tonight a 9pm, and weekdays at 12 midnight, for you west coasters.

I am just reading your posts– Yes, David Copperfield had a sexual harrassment suit or something like this– as a matter of fact, Adam posted about him when it first happened- I thought at the time he was guilty– egotistical SOB!

And thank you for the kind words– My blood boils when I see cruelty or indifference to the weaker! I just go crazy– homicidal rage– (LDG’s words) My brother and I inherited from my father our love for dogs! Boy did my father love dogs- And I use to do work for adoptions– but I got burnt out and my old dog, who has been dying now for the last few months, is not tolerant of too many dogs now– She has been on hospice here for the last six months or so and at her pace, I will be on hospice! She just hangs in here– and she is not suffering yet– This is like a miracle!

And ditto about Robin Meade– she should go over to FOX– Some of the best people there did at one time work for CNN– I also like Wendy Murphy– she should hook up with the lawyers who are on FOX-
Nancy Grace can stay at CNN– LOL

You definately should do some charity work for animals.

As for David Copperfield, didnt he get arrested for sexual harassing some lady after one of his magic shows? Its scary, i guess he has an evil side to him.

As long as they keep it “cold”………I’m not really that concerned. The Belgium beers, as many other European beers, are made so they taste best when served at cellar temperatures (45*F to 55*F). But when I’m sitting on a hot beach I like my beer to be so cold that it cracks the teeth before it slides down the throat and American made beers are brewed best for this.

It may be a surprise to some people how many “American” companies really aren’t American owned. Here’s a link, for example, that lists foreign owned companies and businesses in just Florida alone………….some may surprise you………..

@FL Sunshine, Betty, and other beer commentators…

You might want to know that in the rest of the world, we think of the term “Budweiser” like we think of “Pilsner”… a geographical association with a type of beer, not a specific brand.

Here’s an easy source of info, mostly correct:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bud%C4%9Bjovick%C3%BD_Budvar

It all seems a bit odd to me, this current concern. No one raised much of a voice when the quintessencial American Breweries were closed or folded into conglomerates over the years. Pabst Blue Ribbon, any one?

@All

So glad to hear the fires are getting slowly under control in California. I saw that several international firecrews are going in to help give the local/regional teams a break.

Max and John-

Somehow I figured it out and I was able to get the the pictures– I did the click and save as– I picked out three– and they came out great! And thank you!

Sunshine– Belgium Budweiser sounds so weird!

Brad– that was a terrible storm we had! And I was in it physically- rescuing a dog! grrr! I hate people who don’t take care of their pets! Some cop stopped and saw me with the dog as he was cruising this street and asked me if I was OK– I told him this was not the time to ask me because I was so pi**ed off at people and their neglect of animals!

I am kicking David Coppperfield off his island and moving there and fly in the good people I know- LOL John- bring lots of beer!

My “Prayers” go out to all those fighting these fires, and great appreciation to these other countries that are sending in reinforcements and equipment. My “prayers”are also with those who live in harms way.

This is amazing, through out all these fires and the flooding in the Midwest, you did not hear complaints of blaming the government, and of looting. In the Midwest, all walks of life pitched in to help sandbaging, even the “Governor ” of one of the states was helpng. This does not say much for the City of New Orleans.

May God Bless Each and Everyone in California!

Tony Snow..what a sad loss. Such a honorable, respected man, a tough loss to understand, even for those of us that didn’t know him personally. Our hearts go out to his family, friends and all those at Fox.

A BRIDGE CALLED LOVE
It takes us back to brighter years,
to happier sunlit days
and to precious moments
that will be with us always.
And these fond recollections
are treasured in the heart
to bring us always close to those
from whom we had to part.
There is a bridge of memories
from earth to Heaven above…
It keeps our dear ones near us
It’s the bridge that we call love.
