Fire back in Malibu

This information comes from Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department:

Right now, wind gusts in Malibu are up to 59 miles per hour and strike teams from all over Southern California are on scene doing their best to once again battle flames. It seems like yesterday we were in this same area, battling these same type of flames.

img00010.jpgWhen the last fire was finally out, we noted the dry ground, grasses and brush that still remained in much of the Santa Monica Mountains. Now, the winds and fire have come back and they have come before the rains.

These pictures come from our satellite technician Eric Graychock as the crew makes their way to Malibu from our office in Los Angeles, about 15 miles away. He will be sending me updated pictures and notes as we watch more homes burn and more lives threatened. Here are his first two pictures.

img00011.jpgThe latest numbers are this…2,200 acres, 35 homes and 65 strike teams on the fire. This is from the Fire Captain’s briefing at 9:40am pst. Right now the fire is burning near Latigo Canyon and burning south and west. The fire is burning down canyon. Pepperdine University is once again the fire headquarters.

Property loss does suck. But seriously… The fire suppression standards in that area must be deplorable. When’s the last time there was a controlled burn down there? Malibu is just as heavily forested as some of our magnificent National Parks & Forests (where prescribed burns are the policy)… but heaven forbid we do anything that would temporarily inconvenience Richie Rich in order to stave off future hazards.

Adam, have you ever lived near any of these fires? I pray this fire will be under control soon.

I’ve seen so many houses go up in flames, and not the trees next to them.
Since I live in Colorado, and am prone to fire, what are these houses built from.
From the arial shots they look like tile roofs and stucco sides. So why are they burning so quickly?
Is it because of the winds sucking the fire into the interiors thru windows, and or wooden decks fueling these fires?
Would love to have information on this.

Thanks
Lynn

Are you back out there again? I have been busy preparing a meal and I thought I would come back and check out what is happening- as soon as I opened the home page to Fox News, I saw an article- wildfire tears-

Greta posted an article too-

Oh Lord- just when these people were trying to restore what was lost- again- I am depressed- I like happy news!

Going with Jen S. statement- sending prayers up and all around-

Is it the Santa Anna winds again?

Comment by Susan- Phx- AZ

Never mind about the Santa Anna question- I turned the television on-

spellling- Santa Ana- I just read an article Greta posted- from the LA Times-

Kittell said a cold storm system moving across Arizona from Utah was keeping temperatures unusually mild for Santa Anas –

Now I wish the cold storm was more intense-

What I meant about the cold storm being more intense- I wish it had done a major rainstorm-

I hadn’t even given the winds we have been having since yesterday a second thought about how the winds would start in California again-

Funny how our thinking goes- I sat here thinking boy it sure is windy- not going one step further as to think how the winds are affecting another state- limited thinking on my part-

We are drowning in water, between GA and CA I wish we could share the water. It has been one soggy day.

Kathy Texas-

I haven’t heard from my email friend from Texas who usually lets me know what the weather is like-

Hope this is not like a flood thing-

Speaking of weather, I hope Tom is ok? He hasn’t been around for a couple of days-

Adam-

it is hard to make a comment because one does not know what to say when disaster hits-

but I feel for all of you- and I really admire you and everyone who so couragously jump in to do what can be done- It just makes me feel useless-

hope you get some rest-
