On Oct. 2, 1995, the jury in the O.J. Simpson murder case reached its decision in a Los Angeles criminal court. On Oct. 3, 1995, the verdict was announced. The jury had deliberated for three hours, finding Simpson not guilty.
Now, a Las Vegas jury will makes its own history in the present Simpson case, involving robbery and kidnapping charges.
The jury in this case is made up of nine women and three men. Ten are white. Two are Hispanic. Of the six alternate jurors, two are black.
After hearing nearly a month of testimony in Las Vegas, this jury gets the case Thursday.
This jury has been a very hard-working group of people. Having watched the jury closely on the first and last day of testimony, they all were engaged in the process. Many have filled notebooks with a great deal of scribbling. They have followed the back and forth between the judge and the lawyers, and Wednesday, during a particularly trying period for all parties, the jury was amused by the number of sidebar conferences that took place in front of the judge.
Judge Jackie Glass, after prosecution and defense have asked their questions, has allowed the jurors to submit written questions for witnesses. They are sent to the judge, looked at by the lawyers and the judge has read the questions. Two jurors in particular have submitted questions almost every time. According to those who have been in the courtroom for most of the process, the jurors’ questions have been tough and to the point.
Court sources say the jury is getting along outside the courtroom as well. In fact, they have two large jigsaw puzzles going in their break room.
And Judge Glass imposed a “blind alternate” rule. This meant that the jurors didn’t know who was an alternate and who was an actual juror. They find out now, when the case goes to the “real” jury. The alternates are in the unique position of having to listen to the case but not participate in the end, in the deliberation. They do get to deliberate if there is a problem with one of the original 12. The idea for the “blind alternate” rule is to keep all 18 people in the box engaged in the process.
“The jury in this case is made up of nine women and three women.” Is that right?
Guilty as charged.
This article states that the jury war comprised of nine women and 3 women. This must be a mistake.
Comment? What a waste of bandwidth. Stick OJ in a plastic bag and place it out at the curb for Friday morning pickup.
“The jury in this case is made up of nine women and three women”???
Wasn’t it his property? I am confused as to why he is being charged. If it was his property that had in fact been stolen then he did nothing wrong so I am assuming it wasn’t really his property?
Let only hope he is found guilty and serves his just sentence for this one. He seems to think he is above the law.
Aren’t we passed the notion that somehow a jury of a person’s peers is unfair or subject to a defective verdict because there are no blacks on a jury trying a case against a black?
If he’s found guilty, I’m sure there will be those saying that he was found guilty because the jury was “all white” you watch!! I betcha!! and oh…the police were out to get him again…..yeah yeah poor O.J. How does he keep being victimized by his own….ahem….ACTIONS?
Nevada law prohibits folks from going and taking other property by force regardless of who the property belongs to (this is in the jury instructions). It’s a no-brainer, he committed a crime. Should Nevada revoke this law to suit O.J. Simpson? I think not. But there’s the sympathy vote. Ignorance or emotion is no excuse to break the law. He had no right to do what he did!
Whether you believe O.J. was aware of a firearm in the room or not (I believe he knew)…he still committed, at the very least, robbery and kidnapping. The tape shows he ordered that “NOBODY LEAVE THE ROOM” Remember, other things besides “memorabelia” was taken. A cell phone and hat/sunglasses belonging to the victims. Is it okay for someone to come up to you, steal your purse and say “I’ll mail it to you later”
No…we’d be in serious trouble with the law….but it’s O.J. Simpson, so it’s okay.
Guilty. Maybe he doesn’t deserve a “life sentence” for this particular crime. But he does need to be convicted of most of these charges and do some time.
If I were him and got away with the murder he did….i too would think I am above the law….
Please Jury do the right thing, is all I can think right now. Put this man away for what he clearly did wrong.
He is guilty. Regardless of what the case is about, he will pay now for the deaths of Nicole and Goldman. If they find him not-guilty, change the jury system!
