Sports on Sunday

For those new to this blog, there are a couple of days where I post a thread to let the viewers ask questions or post anything on the topic.

On Tuesdays…Tech Tuesdays. As a gadget guy I do my best to answer all questions tech and at the same time highlight a product that you might be interested in checking out.

So, on Sundays, it’s all about sports. One of the bigger stories of the week is the fact that there still will not be a college football championship game.

Some college presidents make the argument that it makes college football professional and takes away the whole student athlete opportunity. As a former college athlete, those comments need to be seriously scrutinized. With league championships with huge sponsorships and millions of dollars pouring into some programs, those concerns are a bit tardy.

So what do you think? Also, what do you think of the playoffs in the NBA or NHL, or the beginning of baseball season so far?

well believe it or not, i do know a piece sports news. The Royals won, and that never happens!

Seems if they play all season, might as well have a play off. Otherwise, there is no “goal” to reach.
Do you mean like state tournaments? nixing them? nahhh thats seems silly at this point.

Ive already said what i think of what sports players get paid. No human ability is worth those dollars. (Sorry Adam) Thats why I stick to school sports and very few. I enjoy track and field, still go to the high school’s track meets here once in a great while. I actually carried a few school records when i was in jr high. (about 100 yrs ago!)

@Patty

“The Royals won, and that never happens!” — heh, an exaggeration, but a meaningful one. The Major Leagues had a party for Mother’s Day, too … pink bats, anyone?

I actually looked around the sports shows for once ‘tonight’ (US times tonight) and saw a bit about the MLB games, saw Tony Parker getting it done for the Spurs in the NBA, and such. Was a fun little memory trip.

For Hockey fans… Penguins got it done again today vs. the Phlyers, now up 2-0 in the series.

And my special note for Max… How about Man U taking the Premier League… by winning on a penalty? Bet that is all the news in the dailys, for and against.

Comment by Adam Housley

LDG-

I forgot the MAN U win. Since I root for Reading and Chelsea (both wear blue), I am not so jazzed about the MAN U win.

It keeps Ken entertained while I blog away! LOL

Yes– LDG– Ken watched the game– I told him he has an email to answer- I just got on here after my four hour nap! LOL He will be answering you personally!

Adam–

did my order go through? I am worried about the order not going through and if so, I will order again– I want to throw in one more bottle in for my brothers order– so it is four bottles instead of three- make it even-

Comment by Adam Housley

Susan-

Got IT!

Thanks again.

Hmmm…..not too many sports fans hanging around here, I see. So I’m checking in as the resident Tigers fan (not trying to annoy you, Adam) - still a fan, despite their less than impressive performance so far! Sort of painful! But fun at the same time… (don’t understand why people say baseball is boring!)

Comment by Adam Housley

JoAnne-

As you know, I am not hugely upset with their slow start.

ldg..off subject question…
curiosity more than anything since one of my jobs is dealing with household hazardous waste.
i read the article about suicides in japan by mixing household cleaners (do people not realize how deadly that is?)…they called it a “suicide pact”… my question….why? is this some sort of “fad” (for lack of a better word to use)? estimated 50 people in april alone? that is a serious problem. It just seems really odd to me that would be their “weapon” of choice.

Comment by Max Kon

The Presidents of which colleges?

And not having a clear winner takes away the fun from from most sports.

Comment by Max Kon

Patty: if that survey of sexualy active teens in florida was anything to go by maybe those who drank the cleaners thought it’d prevent aids.

Comment by Patty

Max…*L* your “quick” this moring!

Comment by Patty

I too am surprised any college president would say that. lots of funds pumped into sports by endowments, scholarships, paid seats etc. my guess is… that in any over all college, that is where most of the $$’s are given.

Comment by Max Kon

Patty: thanks. I’m still in shock from when i heard about that survey a few months ago :)

Comment by LDG

@Patty

Not a fun topic, but here’s your answer as briefly as I can give it to you. Suicide is a *huge* problem in Japan, for a lot of reasons. Weapons being basically unavailable to the average person, and same average person being adverse to pain, suicide by inhaling deadly gas is the current favorite. Sealing up a room or car and lighting a charcoal stove to get killed with monoxide poisoning was a fashion, but someone pointed out that half of all monoxide-based attempts result in major damage but not death…

…so someone pointed out that a mixture of Sulfur bath salts and a certain household cleanser would generate hydrogen sulfide, which is much more likely to kill someone outright…

…and posted the idea all over the (many) internet sites that provide “how-to-kill-yourself” information, and offer to introduce groups who want to die together.

Yes, there is an legal effort underway to both ban the publication of such things, and make site providers criminally liable for assisting any death, and moreover criminalize the introduction of group suicides.

There is also a popular backlash against this (*finally!*) because hydrogen sulfide is both nasty stuff and very hard to contain, so if someone gasses themselves in an Apartment Building, bets are they leak the stuff all through the building, sickening dozens of neighbors and innocents.

ok, enough on that. Hope that helped, Patty.

@Patty

Here’s a Sports sort-of-trivia for you and any baseball fans (I think there are several who wander by):

You mentioned the Kansas City Royals earlier. So do you know who their manager is this season, and where he managed last season?

I DO……and wont give it away.

….“How special is today’s home opener, Trey Hillman’s first game in Kansas City as the new Royals manager?
It’s huge for the rookie manager, a man who spent five seasons coaching in Japan before making his American big-league managerial debut last week with an opening day win in Detroit that jump-started a 4-2 first week on the road.

Comment by LDG

@Patty

Yes, that’s him. Two time Japan Series Champion manager of the Fighters. So it is fair to say there are a bunch of fans here who wish him and the Royals all the best for this season.

Comment by Jen S

I don’t really care about the college football stuff. My view of college football players has been tainted I guess since my son lived in a dorm with mainly football players this year.

They eat chicken wings and through the bones on the floors in the hallways, the roll bottles of body fluids down the stairs in hopes that it breaks open, they leave the bathrooms a filthy mess of you name it, they are loud and obnoxious with no consideration of others in the dorms. Did someone say party? And in class, well, there seems to be an academic achievement factor missing.

I know you may say these things I’ve listed are true for other students too. But based on his exerience I would say the percentage of them verus others on his campus with this behavior is off the scale.
I think they feel they are superior just for the reason some of you state - if it weren’t for them and the money they bring in, the school wouldn’t be much.
It’s a four year free ride, until they move on to something else.
So…. should there be a championship game? Sure, why not……keep the sports fans happy; but please make all the football players live together.

Comment by Adam Housley

Jen S.

I have seen and even experienced what your son saw. No fun, despite what the guys think. I will say spreads to more than just football and even some of the women athletes go too far. Just FYI

Adam

Comment by Patty

I have to agree with you on that one Jen. Even though our sons went to technical college, therefor sports wasnt a large factor. But even outside of dorms, that is the impression I always had. It is definitly that way in high school here, the athletic depts seem to have a different set of standards, better than thou.

Comment by Chuck D

College Revenue for non-football/basketball sports is not getting any better for many schools. A simple college football bowl game can provide millions of extra dollars in revenue for schools that could use that extra money to pay off building debt, improve facilities (for all student-athletes), or provide scholarships to deserving students.

The sports world is already infiltrated by corporate marketing dollars…and many fans question the authenticity of the teams playing for the nat’l title. Why not have some type of playoff…perhaps the top 4 teams? That would provide fans with a undisputed king and those schools with additional revenue streams.

Adam, by the way, your picture at the top with your new banner makes you look tough and mean! LOL

Go PENS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Amazing that in a time when gas prices are up and the economy is in a suposed slump, all playoff games here in the Burgh are sold out. When the Pens play out of town, they do have a Jumbotron screen outside the arena where fans can watch and cheer them on.

Comment by Adam Housley

Since my Sharks lost, I am too pulling for the Pens.

Goody I love sports! Okay Astros are not playing as well as I would like perhaps it the McGwire baggage they carry? Texas lost!

So I have burning to ask a baseball question. My son’s friend is this amazing pitcher he has a record of 62 strike outs in high school. Is that good in a small team town? None of my brothers were pitchers, so I just don’t know. He is going to a junior college with a great team, then he will decide about the pros.

Comment by Adam Housley

Kathy-

It really depends on the number of games and innings. Either way, JC is not a bad way to go. You can get drafted from there and you can trasfer to a four year college.

Adam

Comment by JoAnne

Patty - The Detroit Tigers are coming your way tomorrow nite! Their records are almost identical…in other words, not so great! I’ll be watching on TV!

Adam - Ouch! :) But I’m not giving up on those Tigers (even though pitching - or lack thereof - is really a disappointment).

It is wonderful, isn’t it? All those years where there were worries about keeping the Penguini’s in town and the fans just show such loyalty. And the Pens have the *best* radio voice in all of Hockey, Mike Lange (see a note below).

@All

A great big *attaboy* to Armed Forces Network (US military overseas Radio and Television) for airing the Cup games, which means an equally big *attaboy* to the NHL for making the games available.

IF you are outside the U.S., not able to get AFN, and not in some way hooked up to get game feeds, the bar-none best hockey experience available is to catch the games is the Internet re-transmission of the local radio broadcast (actually, any NHL game is available this way, regular season or playoffs).

So even where I am living, I can catch Mike Lange and Bourquie calling the game, even though I am a world away from Western PA… happy times for me.

re: Sharks fans now supporting the East — Funny thing, but there is nothing like looking at the remaining choice of Dallas or Detroit to make most all my friends who are Sharks fans into temporary Eastern Conference supporters. ((grin))

oh, and about Trey Hillman at the Royals — Just a curiousity as the age difference isn’t too great: did you cross over with him during your Baseball days? I know he went straight into coaching from his early career, but I actually don’t know where all he (or you, actually) were well enough to guess if you might have been in the same place at the same time.

I kind of miss the old photo collage…especially I actually took one of them!

Comment by JoAnne

Patty - I wouldn’t think morel hunting is much of a sport, but I know people in Northern Michigan who really take it seriously. Used to spend a lot of time up there and had them a few times, lightly sauteed in butter, and they’re really tender adn tasty! But not easy to come by - takes a long time to gather a bunch. (go Tigers!)

Comment by Susan--AZ

Chuck D—

To be honest with you, I pay attention to the D/Backs but not as diligently as I should! Last game I paid attention to was a few days ago when they played the Cubs– Since then I haven’t really paid much attention– I have barely watched any television in the last three days– So thanks for the reminder!! time to become loyal to them again!

And– what is with everyone always talking about Adam when he doesn’t shave? Poor guy– he can’t go on vacation, skip a shave, take a picture to show us where he is at, without someone saying something about him not shaving. Leave him alone! Adam– grow a beard! :D :D

(tone I used: teasing everyone)

How bout letting us know what are the best GPS systems and Police scanners. Which are the best ones for locating and evading the law? Do they make them for your car also?

I’m KIDDING, I KIDD, I KIDD.

Oh this is the sports on sunday blog. I’ll post this anyway. Can someone copy and paste this to the correct tech blog? :)

Football Comment: Some people go to college to be lawyers and doctors. Some people go to college to become pro football players. Different educations and life styles for both of them. If football players want to be messy brute’s….MO power to them. It’s who they are, who cares. Look at what they do and their dedication to the sport is just as intense (and punishing), if not more, than for other students who are clean and orderly and study all the time.

Plus they provide entertainment and pride for the entire school which is HUGE-other students don’t have this type of pressure on them. So they cut loose, good for them.

Can’t wait for the college football season!! Woot Woot.

Why does it take so long for posts to post? Moderators? Or is it to prevent copying and pasting over and over in a quick manner so the new system is delaying posts by a day or so? What is going on here? Just curious…….
